Summary:
In 1939 Austria, Maria, a postulant at the Abbey in Salzburg, spends so much time in the mountains she neglects her duties. Convinced that Maria should leave the Abbey for a time, the Mother Abbess arranges for her to be the governess for the seven Von Trapp children. They are lively, good-natured children, but the widowed Captain Von Trapp runs his home with precision and discourages any frivolity. Tested by the children, Maria wins them over. When the Captain returns from Vienna with his fiancee, the Baroness, and Max Detweiler, an impresario who wants the children to enter the Salzburg Festival, Maria leaves because she is in love with the Captain. The Mother Abbess helps Maria realize that love is also holy and she is reunited with the Von Trapps. Using the Salzburg Festival as a cover, the family flees the Nazis and Austria.
