Follows a young girl's coming of age, moving from the carelessness of childhood through an uneasy adolescence to sexual experience. Set in 1940s rural southern Ontario, this is the story of Del Jordan, a brilliant young woman whose mother wants her daughter to receive the education necessary for controlling her own identity. Del's academic ambitions are temporarily side-tracked by a relationship with an attractive young man. When Del realizes that marriage threatens to reduce her religious and intellectual freedom, she sees the wisdom of her mother's plan for independence.
