Summary:
One of the rarest subjects encountered on the screen is one of its most vital ones - the music composed or arranged to accompany a film (in the case of silent films) or as "background" music (in the case of sound films.) This film does more than illustrate the methods of arranging music - it shows what the transition period was like from silence to sound. Then it goes into the flowering of the sound film with musical excerpts, the while permitting us to see and hear such proteans of cinema music as Domenico Savino, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Miklos Rozsa, David Mendoza and David Raksin. Written and hosted by Arthur Kleiner, former director of music at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
