Summary:
Mavis Dogblood is a Mohawk painter whose husband Jesse Lightning was killed by lightning during a thunderstorm. Since then, she's been lost in her memories and grief, living between two worlds. Eventually, she's forced to face reality and mounting bills, so begins to paint the stories Jessie used to tell her of the Iroquois Peacemaker and Hiawatha. Her art helps keep his memory close to her. When Jessie's obnoxious ex-wife and son move in on her, her life comes to an emotional crisis only kept in balance by Mavis's boyfriend, Solomon "Bug" King. A patient, understanding man, he waits for her to work out her emotional issues with Jessie's death. On her way to New York to for a gallery showing of her paintings, she and Bug experience some spiritual awakenings about their culture, themselves and the Great Peacemaker. The plot incorporates a modern day retelling of the legend of the Great Peacemaker and Hiawatha which dates back to the 14th century. Traditionally, it takes ten days to tell properly.
