Mariah Green, an advocate for battered women in the Chicago area, lives with her maternal grandmother who raised her, while her mother is a fleeting presence having issues with drug addiction, and her father is an absentee. Mariah receives word from Hammond, Indiana, that she's the sole heir of her father's estate and plans to move from Chicago to Indiana to start a new life.
