In Anavatan, the city of the gods, orphaned thieves Spar and Brax and their rivals Graize and Drove are attacked during the three-night chaos of Havo's Dance by plains spirits who have breached the city's wall, leaving one of them dead and leading one to pledge his life to the war goddess Estavia, one to become a prophet, and the other to lose his mind and become a pathway for Anavatan's enemies to the power of the Silver Lake.
