Summary:
Although the Gershwin's' intended for their eldest son, Ira, to take piano lessons, it was his younger brother George who displayed a real talent for music. After years of practice and an assortment of jobs, George went from a music hall pianist to a Tin Pin Alley 'song plugger,' then experienced his first success with 'Swanee'. Despite his ensuing accomplishments, the musical genius yearned to create American music, combining European classics and popular songs.
