Summary:
In 1864 a young widow from Independence, Missouri arrived in Kentucky to supervise the household of a relative. Josephine Russell Erwin had been devastated by the death of her husband, Colonel Eugene Erwin, a grandson of the late Sen. Henry Clay, at the Siege of Vicksburg. Josephine and her second husband, John Clay, managed the famous Thoroughbred stable, Ashland Stock Farm. Josephine was a pioneering woman in the Thoroughbred horse industry, was on the front lines of the Civil War, and also witnessed the settling of California.
