Archival footage (b&w) filmed onstage, 1929-1930 ; danced by Doris Humphrey.
Summary:
Ernestine Stodelle, a former member of the Humphrey-Weidman Company, coaches Nina Watt in two solos choreographed by Doris Humphrey, The call and Breath of Fire. Analyzing the choreography section by section, she clarifies and refines its details, with attention to shape, timing, dynamics, and motivation. Key concepts are identified in subtitles. A full performance of the two solos concludes the tape. This tape is not intended as a means of learning the choreography, nor as a replacement for the notation score or a coach. All works by Doris Humphrey are copyrighted, and permission to perform them must be obtained from her son Charles Humphrey Woodford. These dramatic 1929 solos, performed together, represent a statement about the early development of the modern dance and the growth of the individual.
