Dewey, a smart 11-year-old girl, arrives in Los Alamos, New Mexico to live with her father, a mathematician hard at work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Dewey is different from her peers, but finds solace in her mechanical projects. Eventually, she befriends another outcast Suze, whom she leans on when she loses her father in an accident while he's away in Washington, D.C.
