Describes how James Meredith planned on marching more than 200 miles from Memphis, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi, to encourage African American voter registration but was shot by a white gunman along the way. By the time he rejoined the march several weeks later, the group of those who stepped in to walk in his absence had grown to 15,000 individuals. Author Bausum recounts the events leading up to and following Meredith's historic march, nicknamed the March Against Fear, shedding light on the civil rights movement.
