Title assigned by cataloger. On December 27, 2007 Kenya held presidential and parliamentary elections. Incumbent President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner and sworn in on December 30, 2007, despite claims by opposition leader Raila Odinga that the election was rigged. Tribalism played a strong role in the election, Kibaki's traditionally dominant Kikuyu ethnic group gained much support in Central Kenya. Odinga, of Luo ethnicity, built a broader base by allying with the Luhya of Western Kenya, Kalenjin from the Rift Valley, and Muslim leaders from the coast. Kalonzo Musyoka, came in third, getting most of his votes from his Kamba base. After the announcement of Kibaki's victory protests and ethnic violence broke out, much of it directed against Kikuyus.
