Summary:
Ecology: nature's delicate balance: Students learn what environmental organizations are doing to protect Earth's plant and animal life. Koalas saved: Environmentalists in Australia push for a National Koala Act to help protect one of the country's iconic animals. Parrot genepool: Conservationists try to keep rare parrots alive in captivity as their numbers dwindle in the wild. Right whale lanes: Endangered North Atlantic right whales migrate to the Bay of Fundy, where many were killed by freight ships until the Canadian government changed ship routes. Terrors of Tasmania: The island of Tasmania off the coast of Australia is home to one of the world's strangest animals: the Tasmanian devil. These tiny but fierce marsupials, noted for their voracious appetite and loud unearthly screams, have recently fallen victim to a debilitating form of cancer. Find out how local conservationists are working to stop this deadly disease from wiping out the Tasmanian devil population for good. Whale sharks: Whale sharks, among the largest creatures on the planet, are a common site at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. Yet little is know of these endangered behemoths' whereabouts once they leave the safety of the reef. The manatee: an endangered species: Take students on a mission to see what's being done to save the manatee, a marine animal sometimes known as a "sea cow" because of its size and diet, which consists mainly of vegetation. We'll journey to points in Florida where the manatee lives and to the Sea World Aquarium in Orlando. There, you'll see how researchers and scientists are studying and protecting the peaceful manatee to ensure its survival. Comes complete with online teachers guide which includes subject matter revision and suggestions on how to present material, questions to ask students, career possibilities and class projects to help illustrate the key concepts. Relevant Curriculum Areas: Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, General Science, Marine Biology. Zookeeper: In this program host Melody Young visits with Zookeeper Ric Urban and discovers the education required to care for animals and the role of zoos in preserving endangered species. Subjects Covered Include: What does a zookeeper do? How do you get started as a zookeeper? Do you have to go to college to be a zookeeper? What courses are important to be a zookeeper? Different types of zookeepers. Where do zoos get their animals? Is math important to being a zookeeper? What are endangered animals? Why is it important to have zoos? Why is it important to feed animals a proper diet? Tigers of the snow: Perhaps 300 Siberian tigers--one of the world's great cats--are thought to exist in the wild. Without human help to protect these beautiful cats from environmental changes, poaching, and the encroachment of humankind, they may become extinct in our lifetime.
