Summary:
Castles, along with knights, cathedrals, and monks, are among the most important features of the medieval world, and castles continue to draw a great deal of attention from tourists as well as medieval historians, art historians, and archaeologists. Yet, despite their relative importance within medieval society, castles are also one of the least understood features of the medieval landscape. This course considers the chronology of medieval fortifications and castles and then considers the social and landscape natures of castles and the role of the castle in particular regions in Europe in the Middle Ages, most particularly the British Isles, France, and the Crusader settlements in the Holy Land--Container.
