Including the artist's own writing from the 1990s to the present day, alongside archival images, and documentation from recent exhibitions and projects." --Artist's website. 520 8 $a One of the pioneers of the British Black Arts Movement, Lubaina Himid first came to prominence in the 1980s when she began organising exhibitions of work by her peers, whom she felt were under-represented in the contemporary art scene. Himid's work challenges the stereotypical depictions of black figures in art history, foregrounding the contribution of the African diaspora to Western culture. 'Invisible Strategies' brings together a wide range of Himid's paintings from the 1980s to the present day, as well as sculptures, ceramics, and works on paper. The exhibition opens with Himid's monumental Freedom and Change, 1984, which appropriates and transforms the female figures from Picasso's 'Two Women Running on the Beach' ('The Race'), 1922, into black women, powerfully and humorously subverting one of the most canonical paintings in Western art history. Containing many works shown for the first time in decades alongside pieces never-before seen in a public gallery, this exhibition highlights Himid's consistently thought-provoking and distinctive visual style. 600 10 $a Himid, Lubaina, $d 1954- $v Exhibitions. 600 17 $a Himid, Lubaina, $d 1954- $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01612163 600 14 $a Himid, Lubaina, $d 1954- 650 0 $a Art, Black $z England $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Women, Black, in art $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Blacks in art $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009117254 650 0 $a Racism in art $v Exhibitions. 650 7 $a Art, Black. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00816023 650 7 $a Racism in art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086652 650 7 $a Women artists. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01177159 650 7 $a Women artists, Black. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01177174 650 7 $a Women in art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01177826 651 7 $a England. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01219920 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1424028 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1424028 700 12 $a Himid, Lubaina, $d 1954- $t Works. $k Selections. 700 1 $a Himid, Lubaina, $d 1954- $e author. $e author. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nb2005004612 700 1 $a Panting, Lisa, $e editor. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nb2004008248 700 1 $a StaÌhl, Malin, $e editor. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nb2013013199 710 2 $a Modern Art Oxford, $e host institution. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2003094637 710 2 $a Spike Island (Firm), $e host institution. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr2004014293 710 2 $a Nottingham Contemporary (Nottingham, England), $e host institution. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2011003700 710 2 $a Badischer Kunstverein, $e host institution. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n50077803 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231020023048.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=EB395AC6083E11EABF3FA51A97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
