Drawing on cases from Nepal and India, the author adopts a human rights-based approach, interpreting slavery as a violation of human rights, and focusing on the empowerment of slaves as rights holders. Ultimately the book aims to explore the links between rights, power inequality and oppression, and to uncover ways to achieve the full liberation of bonded labourers. Identifying the factors and forces that contribute to and reinforce the situation of bonded labour in South Asia, the book demonstrates how systems of bonded labour are connected to long-term processes of colonisation, dispossession, migration, nationalisation of natural resources, and the introduction of private land ownership. Despite the fact that the United Nations has reported debt bondage as the most prevalent form of forced labour worldwide, there it is still little known about the real practical impacts of this approach to the lives of marginalised people."-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Slavery $z South Asia. 650 0 $a Peonage $z South Asia. 650 0 $a Human rights $z South Asia. 650 7 $a Human rights. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00963285 650 7 $a Peonage. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01057233 650 7 $a Slavery. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01120426 651 7 $a South Asia. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01244520 650 7 $a South Asia. $2 pplt 650 7 $a Slavery. $2 pplt 650 7 $a Forced labour. $2 pplt 650 7 $a Human rights. $2 pplt 776 08 $i Online version: $a Samonova, Elena, author. $t Modern slavery and bonded labour in South Asia $d Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2019 $z 9780429054952 $w (DLC) 2019001580 830 0 $a Routledge research on Asian development ; $v 5. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220526013543.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=0E517E4871B711EB8A4F4B2E3BECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
