Summary:
Two brothers emigrate to Turin to escape the poverty of their Sicilian hometown. The story unfolds over a period of six years. The older brother has the desire to see his brother, Pietro, become a school teacher. Giovanni makes tremendous sacrifices, unaware that Pietro is squandering his money given to him and skipping school.
