Summary:
"Pueblo, Colorado, 1932. Billy, a retired dentist, is a local celebrity owing to his rumored past as Billy the Kid. Billy lives in a corrupt town where Stokes, the owner of a speakeasy, has the sheriff in his pocket and can kill a man with impunity. Billy spends his spare time writing a book about his purported past as Billy the Kid, but whether the stories are true or not remains a mystery. Billy tries to romance Grace, the town's beautiful widow, but she spurns his every advance, not wanting to associate with a man who lives in a fantasy world. There is one person in town who believes in Billy's storied past - Tommy, a young boy who worships the gunslingers of old. Billy's life takes a sudden twist when an old friend opens up a speakeasy that threatens Stokes's own speakeasy business. When Billy is out of town, Stokes kills Billy's friend. As distraught as he is by the news, Billy won't pick up a gun to take revenge on Stokes. He tells Tommy he is no longer a gunslinger and has renounced violence. Then Billy learns another piece of distressing news: Stokes plans to kill Tommy's dad, who was working for Billy's friend in the rival speakeasy. Grace, who has developed feelings for Billy, pleads with him not to fight Stokes. Billy is waiting when Stokes and his henchmen come looking for Tommy's dad in the trailer park where he lives. With a lucky shot, Billy shoots the gun out of Stokes's hand. During the melee that follows, Stokes and his chief henchman shoot each other by accident, but not before Billy himself is shot. Billy survives his injury. Tommy and his dad leave town to begin a new life. And Grace and Billy ride off, literally, into the sunset -- but not before Billy does something extraordinary that reveals his true identity. With witty dialog, charming small-town characters, and adept twists, Meech creates an engaging alternative story of the life of a famous Old West outlaw"-- Provided by publisher.
