As personal assistant to successful banker Richard Lorival, Margaret Gates has a job that is the envy of her colleagues in the typing-pool: she works from the home of Richard and his beautiful artist wife, Olivia, and even accompanies them on a trip to Italy. But Margaret's mother disapproves of this unusual working arrangement; for she guesses, rightly, that Margaret is in love with her boss, and fears that her daughter will miss out on marriage. When Olivia dies in a tragic accident, the relationship between Richard and Margaret--and his demanding daughter, Vanessa--is put to the test. But this is England in the 1950s, and women like Margaret put duty before passion. Many years will pass before Margaret finds the love and happiness she has sought for so long.
