Summary:
When Kate Meacham's grandfather, a legendary diplomat, dies, she loses her status even though she still knows everyone and has made important contributions. Henry Deeping, just joining the Foreign Office, and wanting to make his mark, agrees to serve as Kate's escort for events to which she is no longer invited, and Kate will introduce him to the important people she knows so well. But when they spot a foreign agent, they decide to investigate on their own.
