Summary:
Betita, de nueve ąos, y sus padres huyeron de M̌xico despǔs de que los c̀rteles mataran a su t̕o, y se establecieron en Los ℓngeles en busca de asilo pol̕tico y seguridad en lo que su padre llama Aztl̀n, la tierra de las grullas; Pero ahora han sido barridos por el Servicio de Control de Aduanas de Inmigraci̤n del gobierno, su padre deportado a M̌xico y Betita y su madre confinadas en un campo de detenci̤n familiar - Betita encuentra coraz̤n en su imaginaci̤n y los poemas ilustrados que su padre le ensę̤, pero cada d̕a amenaza con destrozar a͠n m̀s a su familia. Nine-year-old Betita and her parents fled Mexico after her uncle was killed by the cartels, and settled in Los Angeles seeking political asylum and safety in what her father calls Aztlan, the land of the cranes; but now they have been swept up by the government's Immigration Customs Enforcement, her father deported back to Mexico, and Betita and her mother confined in a family detention camp--Betita finds heart in her imagination and the picture poems her father taught her, but each day threatens to further tear her family apart.
