Summary:
The cheap detective: Peter Falk plays a worldly, cynical gumshoe who takes on San Francisco, thugs, crooks, Nazis, femme fatales and the Golden Gate Bridge in this tribute to Bogie and the Hammett/Chandler school of hard-boiled detectives. Big trouble: Insurance man Leonard Hoffman (Alan Arkin) finds himself strapped for cash after he decides to send his three sons to Yale. Leonard gets drawn into a bizarre scheme by Steve Rickey (Peter Falk) and his screwball wife, Blanche (Beverly D'Angelo) to collect on an "accidental" death policy. Their wacky plot gets sidetracked by a series of hilariously unforeseen twists. Happy New Year: Slightly sleazy jewel thieves Nick (Peter Falk) and Charlie (Charles Durning) are going for the big score when they head to West Palm Beach to hit the exclusive Harry Winston's jewelry store. With Charlie playing the chauffeur in a hot Rolls-Royce and Nick masquerading alternately as a rich octogenarian and his sister, they set out to win the confidence of the greedy store manager. Luv: A lovesick schnook agrees to take his college buddy s wife off his hands, so his friend can marry a blonde gym teacher.
