Summary:
"As the PRC seeks to assert its might in what Russia would call its "near abroad," the South China Sea region has become one of the most politically volatile in our current world order. In Malaysian Crossings, Chan Cheow Thia foregrounds the intra-Asia linkages between Malaysia and other sinitic-speaking locales (China, Taiwan, and Singapore) in the region in a provocative engagement with global Sinophone studies. Literature as Chan understands it is not merely the conventional exercise of belle lettres but the volatile contact zone of languages, ethnicities, and politics. To demonstrate what he calls the dynamics of "Malaysian crossings," Chan highlights four cases, Han Suyin (Rosalie Matilda Kuanghu Chou), Lin Cantian, Li Yongping, and Wang Anyi, and links them to a far broader mapping of Sinophone world literature, from the Malay peninsula to Borneo, Mainland China, Taiwan, the United States, and Switzerland"-- Provided by publisher.
