Originally written as a "verse memoir", this one-woman play tells the story of a traumatized girl who courageously survives her childhood abuse to emerge determined to heal and thrive?committed to living a creative, joyous, and purpose-driven life. The author bears witness to the emotional and physical pain she endured as a young child from her father's abuse?all the while assuming the role (abdicated by her mother) of protecting her beloved younger siblings from their father's sickness and cruelty. In addition, she discusses the effect of this trauma on both her childhood and adult relationships, the challenges she faced during her long abuse recovery (especially, the difficulty of recovering her buried memories after traumatic amnesia), and the effect of her childhood trauma on her adult life. Listeners are encouraged to listen to children when they share truthful accounts of their abuse?desperate in their almost unimaginable suffering?and to support adult survivors as they fight to reclaim their lives. -- from the back cover.
