Summary:
A trilogy of stories set in the same house--with different occupants and spanning over 40 years--examines three women, the common crisis of an unexpected pregnancy, and the wrenching decision to have an abortion. In 1952, abortion is illegal. A widowed nurse deals with her unexpected pregnancy by taking drastic measures to obtain one. In 1974, a happily married woman, the mother of four children, discovers that she is pregnant again. Now she must choose between losing her lifelong dream and terminating her pregnancy. In 1996, a Catholic college student finds herself pregnant as the result of an affair with a professor. She decides on an abortion, but does not realize what it means to go through with one, while society rends itself asunder with violent protest.
