"Visionaire's seventh season, seventh issue, second fall ... Black, black, black. The feeling is black. Black as the color. We're all feeling black. It's about nighttime, darkness, specters, and, yes, death"--At head of title sheet. Unbound photographs, prints, and prose, printed on papers of varying texture, laid in a black stiff paper portfolio tied with three black ribbons; part of title on portfolio rendered in cut-out letters. Contributor list: Andrew Brooker, Bernard Figueroa, Bill Cuningham, Bruce Weber, David McDonough, Edward Gorey, Elaine Gan, Enrique Badulescu, Francois Berthoud, Greg Foley, James Dignan, John Callahan, Juan Botas, Karen Park, Kristina Colovic, Mario Testino, Mats Gustafson, Max Vadukul, Michael Capotosto, Michael Stratton, Michel Haddi, Mika Mizutani, Noelle Hoeppe, Peter Lindbergh, Philippe Salomon, Ross Bleckner, Ruben Toledo, Satoshi Saikusa, Cecilia Dean, Stephen Gan. Summary:
"With Black, Visionaire doubled in size - and also in price. The issue was inspired by the season's all-black Comme des Garcons collection (which Bill Cunningham photographed and we got to print); by Edward Gorey's macabre cartoons (which we also got to print, sometimes as eerie backdrops for the Comme des Garcons dresses); and by artist Antoni Tapies, who was having a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art around that time (whose work we did not get permission to print). Black was about darkness, the night, shadows, and what you may or may not see when you squint your eyes. A traditional artist's portfolio case, tied with three black ribbons, provided the concept for the packaging. The die-cut letters were based on tears Stephen had made with scrap paper that enabled, once again, different first pages to peek through the cover. Bruce Weber's photograph of a cowboy in the night, François Berthoud's sinister fashion illustrations, and 1,500 original photo collages (yes, 1,500 were made by hand, with no two alike!) by young photographer Kristina Colovic, were among the most cherished contributions to this issue"--Publisher's description.
