This book describes the mores and history of the orthodox culture of the hasidim immigrants in present day New York and analyzes the cultural content of more than 370 tales.-- Mintz explores the intimate relationship that exists between hasidic tale of hasidic law, rituals, values and social structure, including the role of the Rebbe, upbringing of children, role of women, relationship of magic and mysticism and the social interactions of the various "courts" with each other and the outside world.
