After her parents' deaths, 10-year-old Miho moves to Japan to live with her bachelor uncle. While struggling to adjust to her new home, she meets Gaia, the living embodiment of the Earth in the form of an otter, who grants her the power to communicate with the world's oceans. Miho learns that the sea is in danger and she must help save it.
