The series follows members of the Sloane family as they attempt to reunite and survive the effects of an EMP caused by a solar flare that disrupts the world's communication and power systems. With her friends, Madison leaves behind her life as a student at University of California, Davis to head back to Sacramento and to her family, and along the way begins to experience what happens to society when ordinary people are faced with impossible choices.
