Uses the metaphor of the "calabazo" (pumpkin) to describe the way in which the children of Colombia's troubled Chocó province experience the poverty and political conflict they have witnessed. Argues that the devastating elements can be overcome through culture, recognition of the diversity of the people, their territory, history and dignity.
