Summary:
Inspired by Nishiki Masaaki's biography of Konoe Fumitaka, the eldest son of Prince Konoe Fumimaro, who was captured by the Red Army in Manchuria and held in prison in Siberia until his death. In the play, Lieutenant Kokonoe Hidetaka is captured by the Red Army and interned in a labor camp, where he is subjected to harsh interrogations and accused of being a spy for the Americans because he attended Princeton University. He recalls his days in Princeton when he met and fell in love with a Chinese woman named Ai-ling. Unfortunately, Hidetaka was the son of the then Prime Minister of Japan and Ai-ling was a niece of Song Mei-ling, the wife of Chiang Kai-shek, the Chairman of the National Government of China. Hidetaka and Ai-ling want nothing but peace between China and Japan, but when the two countries go to war, they are split apart. Hidetaka secretly begins an initiative to bring peace, but this comes to an end when he is drafted into the Kwantung Army.
