Summary:
In June 1972 a group of men were caught breaking into national offices of the Democratic Party, located in the Watergate complex. Almost at once it had become clear that the burglars had close ties to President Nixon, a Republican running for reelection. The burglars were being prosecuted on criminal charges for the break-in, but investigators wanted to determine whether the president had known about the break-in, or possibly even ordered it. Nixon used a power called executive privilege to withhold evidence, making the Watergate case a showdown which tested the limits of executive privilege.
