Summary:
Wounded Heart focuses on the Lakota Sioux at Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota where they live, isolated and alienated, from American society. Interviews with tribe members, government officials, health care providers, the publisher of the tribal newspaper, and an anthropologist result in a distressing picture of the health issues, economic strains, and adverse social conditions that dominate the lives of the Lakota Sioux. Russell Means, perhaps the most famous extant American Indian activists, is the voice of the film, which is by turns accusatory, illuminating, and marginally hopeful that strengthening of cultural values can help sustain life on the reservation.
