Two interwoven stories, the first being set in 2013 where fourteen-year-old City becomes an overnight celebrity after having a meltdown on TV. He's sent to stay with his grandmother in a small coastal town where a girl named Baize has recently disappeared. He is given a book in which a character, also named City Coldson, can travel in time. The book's City encounters Baize in the future, and current City discovers the key to Baize's disappearance in the work shed behind his grandmother's house.
