When her mother takes off her ring, Maria tries it on and is beside herself when, hours later, she thinks it has been kneaded into the tamales. In the Month of Kislev: A wealthy, arrogant merchant learns the true meaning og Hanukkah when he takes the family of a poor peddler to court for savoring the smell of his wife's pancakes from outside their window.
