Summary:
Hosaka Isao, a student at Kyoto University in the turbulent 1940s, falls in love with the Indonesian girl Lina, who is living in Japan with her brother Luat. Lina and Luat have to return to their home country to protect their father, Dr. Ningrat, who is one of the leaders of the "merdeka (independence)" movement in Indonesia. Isao and Lina promise to meet again some day. When Japan goes to war with the Allied Powers, Isao is drafted and, with his brogher-in-law Captain Harada, goes to fight against the Dutch in Indonesia. During the fighting, Isao rescues Dr. Ningrat and meets Lina again. In the beginning, the Japanese military governs with moderation, but as the war situation gets worse for Japan, the military government becomes abusive and oppressive toward the Indonesians and the Dutch POWs. Though Isao works hard for the welfare of the POWs, he still becomes a target for their anger over their treatment by the Japanese. When Japan loses the war, Luat asks Isao to hand over weapons and ammunitions to the Indonesian independence movement. Although Isao hesitates to violate the the Allies' disarmament orders, Harada has Isao pass the weapons to the Indonesians. Harada joins the partisans while asking Isao to represent him when the Allies summon him. Eventually Isao is put on trial by the Allies and although Lina testifies on his behalf, the court orders him to be executed for the crimes of abusing POWs and handing weapons over to the Indonesians.
