Summary:
Part of a series that explores the origins of music and its cultural background. This segment looks at the two main types of Indian music, the Carnatic of the south and the Hindustani of the north, dating back more than three thousand years. Demonstrates the use of a wide variety of simple and complex instruments. Indian music coordinates string, wind, and percussion instruments to evoke a provocative and sensuous style. Points out several ways in which Indian music differs from Western music. Includes a traditional Indian dance showing the importance of the art of gesture.
