The hero of the play, Virelade, lives in his Landes home with his two daughters, Mariane and Elisabeth. Formerly abandoned by his wife, he condemns his favorite daughter, Elisabeth, to stay close to him. When he discovers that she is ready to leave him to marry Alain, a charming but indecisive young man, he engages in a perverse game, which separates the two young people. The rupture becomes final with the marriage of Alain and Mariane, unhappy rival of her sister. The outrageously possessive father won, but some time later, each of the protagonists knows that they can no longer feed on illusions.
