Includes a booklet with an introduction by Elizabeth Thompson and an English translation of Hildegard's songs by W.R. Johnson. Also includes a compact disc on which the songs are performed by Anima, a Vermont-based group that specialises in mediaeval music, lead by Elizabeth Thompson. The CD was produced by Charles Ellers in the studios of Vermont Public Radio in June 1997. "This publication was planned to celebrate Hildegard's nine hundredth birthday. Claire Van Vliet made the pulp paintings with Katie MacGregor in Whiting, Me. who also made the colored sheets and covers. The other papers are Twinrocker Lilac Wind & Barcham Green RWS, Nefertiti, Renaissance IV and Dover; the popups were executed by Audrey Holden, the chemise & slipcase by Judi Conant & Mary Richardson in Maidstone, Vermont. The Latin text is Rudolph Koch's Wallau & the English, Trump Medaeval. The cover lettering is Circulus Sapientiae in Hildegard's secret alphabet."--Booklet colophon. Accordion-fold format with seven pop-up illustrations. Accordion created using hand-made paper strips to lace sections together. In a colorful cloth covered portfolio with the booklet and music CD in a gold paste-paper pocket, in a slipcase. Special Collections has copy no. 25, signed by the book artist and printer, Claire Van Vliet. IaU Special Collections copy has related UI Libraries program booklet and card, describing this artist book "Circle of Wisdom" as the 4-millionth acquisition, and the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Iowa Women's Archives. Library event was held at the Iowa Memorial Union on Friday, April 12, 2002, and included guest speaker Marian Rees. Includes statement by Nancy L. Baker, University Librarian. From program booklet: "...Circle of Wisdom was selected as the 4-millionth acquisition to acknowledge the significance of the artist's books and private press collections at the University of Iowa Libraries. This choice also adds to the Libraries' digital music assets and resources about women and women's history." IaU
