In Cambridge, England, a college professor who was also a writer of romance novels is murdered. She was Maureen Helmont, famous for her sexually active life which began when she seduced her uncle at the age of 19. Inspector Sidney Walsh of the British CID hunts the person who smothered her while she slept.
