Coming from a developing country to what was often referred to as "the greatest nation in the world," I experienced a great shock at the discrepancy between what I had heard and the reality I experienced, especially in the following areas: 1. Why do people go to the US? 2. There is freedom for everyone to achieve the American dream. 3. The US is the most democratic country in the world. 4. The best institutions of learning are found in the US. 5. The US is a melting pot of all the cultures of the world. This book evaluates these and other assumptions against my PERSONAL EXPERIENCE as well as that of others I have read about in my now 21 years of living in the US.
