From the communal beginnings to the Eucharistic controversies -- From the reformation to the twentieth century: the age of individualism -- Place of the human person in the church -- Human person, the will of God, and authority -- Inner life.
Summary:
The theme of this book is fairly standard: an historical discussion of the bipolarity that has characterized the history of the Church, a communal spirit in the early centuries and an individualistic spirit in the more recent centuries. The author is much taken with the necessity of a personalist spirit, founded on freedom and love, modeled upon Christ Incarnate. This personalist spirit is meant to avoid the excesses of individualism and to recapture the riches of the communal spirit in the reality of the Mystical Body of Christ.
