Le butô, autrement appelée danse des ténèbres, est apparu au Japon à la fin des années 1950. Depuis son arrivée en France à la fin des années 1970, il a fait ressurgir des désirs d'expressionnisme chez les danseurs contemporains, alors tournés vers les abstractions américaines.
