Pirates on horseback: Hoppy's sidekick, California, learns that his only known kin was killed because he refused to disclose the location of his gold mine to a gang of thieves. Hoppy and Lucky help California go after the killers and locate the secret mine. Borrowed trouble: Hoppy and California get involved in searching for a kidnapped schoolmarm, get caught in a feud between rival saloon owners, and take turns as substitute teachers. Dangerous venture: Lucky and California encounter trouble over an ancient Aztec curse and a crooked cattle rancher. False colors: After Bud Lawton is killed, Hoppy, Jimmy, and California become partners in the Diamond Hitch ranch then discover a rival claimant to the ranch. The devil's playground: The three friends search for stolen gold hidden in a rugged canyon and run up against a gang that's also after it.
