This study of Caesar's Commentarii de bello Gallico takes both a historical and a literary approach. The author discusses the political situation of the late Roman republic and the war in Gaul, as well as giving attention to the characteristics of the Commentarii, their place in the field of literature, their structure and narrative technique, and the question of their veracity.
