This first comprehensive overview of Gottsched's translations places them in the context of eighteenth-century intellectual, literary, and cultural history, showing that they were part of an ambitious, progressive program undertaken with her famous husband to shape German culture during the Enlightenment. In doing so it casts Gottsched and her work in an entirely new light. Including chapters on all the main subject areas and genres from which Gottsched translated, it also explores the relationship between her translations and her original works, demonstrating that translation was central to her oeuvre. A bibliography of Gottsched's translations and source texts concludes the volume. 600 10 $a Gottsched, Louise Adelgunde Victorie, $d 1713-1762 $x Language and languages. $x Language and languages. 650 0 $a Translators $z Germany. 650 0 $a Translating and interpreting $z Germany $x History $y 18th century. 650 0 $a Books and reading $z Germany $x History $y 18th century. 651 0 $a Germany $x Intellectual life $y 18th century. 650 0 $a English language $x Translating into German. 650 0 $a Enlightenment $z Germany. 830 0 $a Studies in German literature, linguistics, and culture (Unnumbered) 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231017020224.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=37E476440C5711E28A6157AD6AFF544EInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
