After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances. In this last remnant of the Wild West--where oilmen like J.P. Getty made their fortunes and where desperadoes like Al Spencer, the "Phantom Terror," roamed--many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll climbed to more than twenty-four, the FBI took up the case. It was one of the organization's first major homicide investigations and the bureau badly bungled the case. In desperation, the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including one of the only American Indian agents in the bureau. The agents infiltrated the region, struggling to adopt the latest techniques of detection. Together with the Osage they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. 610 10 $a United States. $b Federal Bureau of Investigation $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Osage Indians $x Crimes against $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Murder $z Osage County $z Osage County $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Homicide investigation $z Osage County $z Osage County $v Case studies. 651 0 $a Osage County (Okla.) $x History $y 20th century. 610 11 $a United States. $b Federal Bureau of Investigation $v Case studies. 650 4 $a History $x Native American. 650 4 $a History $z United States $y 20th Century. 650 7 $a HISTORY $x Native American. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a HISTORY $z United States $x 20th Century. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a TRUE CRIME $x Murder. $2 bisacsh 610 17 $a United States. $b Federal Bureau of Investigation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00528882 650 7 $a Conspiracy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00875719 650 7 $a Homicide investigation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00959684 650 7 $a Murder. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01029781 650 7 $a Murder for hire. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01029802 651 7 $a Oklahoma $z Osage County. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01208067 610 17 $a United States. $b Federal Bureau of Investigation $v Case studies. $2 sears 650 7 $a Osage Indians. $2 sears 650 7 $a Homicide $z Osage County (Okla.) $v Case studies. $2 sears 650 7 $a Criminal investigation $z Osage County (Okla.) $v Case studies. $2 sears 651 7 $a Osage County (Okla.) $x History $y 20th century. $2 sears 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a True crime stories. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919985 655 7 $a Case studies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423765 655 7 $a True crime stories. $2 lcgft 655 4 $a True crime stories. 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Grann, David. $t Killers of the Flower Moon. $d New York : Doubleday, [2017] $z 9780385534253 $w (OCoLC)953792621 $w (OCoLC)953792621 941 $a 4 $n 1 952 $l FXPH314 $d 20231004105601.0 $n 10 $p +2LP+CD 952 $l S1PD771 $d 20210818154918.0 $m 364.1523 GRA $n 18 $p 2 Large Print, 1 cd book 952 $l KOPC446 $d 20210616161220.0 $n 10 952 $l CDPF771 $d 20210603110814.0 $n 19 $p +LP+CD 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=2C0F6D62AC3311EB98A411E3203FDB2A 994 $a C0 $b IOZInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
