As he lay bleeding in the minefield, his first instict was to kill himself with his own AK-47. Fortunately, a friend disarmed him and carried him to the nearest hospital. The recovery period was arduous for Reth, his wife, and their baby, as they faced starvation, surviving at times on only rice and cooked grass. Reth made progress and became a disability outreach worker eventually he received the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. He was a Co-recipient of the prize along with Jody Williams who is the campaign's director.
