Contributions look at the concurrent histories of communalism and globalization in four South Asian contexts - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka - as well as in various diasporic locations. Encompassing different disciplinary and theoretical perspectives, and a range of methodologies, the book offers substantial scholarly analysis that base arguments on close-up views of specific historical and contemporary phenomena. Contributors argue that communalism is not a resurgence of tradition, but rather an inherently modern phenomenon and a product of the fundamental agencies and ideas of modernity. Similarly, it is also argued that globalization should not be identified as a unique and unprecedented process.
