On January 25, 1862, naturalist Charles Darwin received a box of orchids. One flower, the Madagascar star orchid, fascinated him. It had an 11.5 inch nectary, the place where flowers make nectar, the sweet liquid that insects and birds eat. How, he wondered, did insects pollinate the orchid? After experiments, he made a prediction. There must be a giant moth with a 11.5 inch proboscis, a straw-like tongue. Darwin died without ever seeing the moth, which was catalogued by entomologists in in 1903. But still no one had actually observed the moth pollinating the orchid. In 1992, German entomologist Lutz Thilo Wasserthal, Ph.D. traveled to Madagascar. By then, the moths were rare. He managed to capture two moths and released them in a cage with the orchid. He captured the first photo of the hawk moth pollinating the flower, as Darwin had predicted 130 years before. This pollen science book includes backmatter information on the moth, the orchid, Charles Darwin, and Lutz Wasserthal. Also included is Wasserthal's original photo taken in 1992. 521 1 $a 007-010. 541 $d 20190821. 600 1 $a Wasserthal, Lutz Thilo $v Juvenile literature. 600 1 $a Darwin, Charles $d 1809-1882 $v Juvenile literature. 650 $a Pollen $v Juvenile literature. 650 $a Sphingidae $v Juvenile literature. 650 $a Plants $x Evolution $v Juvenile literature. 650 $a Pollination by insects $v Juvenile literature. 650 $a Discoveries in science $x History $v Juvenile literature. 650 $a Life sciences $x History $v Juvenile literature. 650 $a Pollinators $x Evolution $v Juvenile literature. 655 7 $a History. 655 $a Picture books for children. 655 7 $a Juvenile works. 655 7 $a History. 655 7 $a Picture books. 700 $a Willis, Peter, $q ((Peter N.),.) 830 $a Moments in science. 830 $a Moments in science. 941 $a 8 952 $l GOPG641 $d 20240409033708.0 952 $l RZPE145 $d 20230222010638.0 952 $l FXPH314 $d 20220909054150.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20210428014150.0 952 $l CBPF522 $d 20200724011417.0 952 $l DBPE173 $d 20191015015754.0 952 $l XPPC367 $d 20191011012228.0 952 $l VIPA334 $d 20190822010347.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=1F344A06C4A211E9B0E1DB5297128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
